Small Balcony, Big Impact: Balcony & Terrace Ideas for Kolkata Apartments

A huge number of the apartments we work in across New Town and Salt Lake have one thing in common: a balcony that's been used as storage since the day the family moved in. It doesn't have to stay that way.

Start with weatherproof flooring. Outdoor-rated tiles or decking boards handle Kolkata's monsoon far better than leftover indoor tiles, and instantly make the space feel intentional rather than accidental.

Vertical greenery over floor planters. Wall-mounted planters and hanging baskets keep the floor clear for actual seating, which matters enormously on the compact balconies typical of New Town high-rises.

One good chair beats two cramped ones. A single well-chosen lounge chair with a small side table usually gets used far more than a cramped two-seater nobody can comfortably sit in.

Lighting changes everything after 7pm. A simple string of warm-toned lights or a single wall sconce turns a daytime-only balcony into somewhere you'll actually sit in the evening.

Screen it, don't enclose it. Bamboo or fabric screens give privacy from neighbouring flats without fully enclosing the space and losing the airflow that makes a balcony worth having in the first place.

Have an awkward balcony or terrace you'd like ideas for? Get in touch — it's often one of the most cost-effective upgrades we do.
