Monsoon-Proofing Your Home's Exterior: A Kolkata Homeowner's Guide

Every year, a predictable share of the exterior renovation calls we get in July and August are for damage that proper monsoon-proofing would have prevented entirely. It's almost always cheaper to prepare than to repair.

Waterproof the roof and parapet before the season, not during it. Once water has already found its way into a wall, the fix becomes structural rather than cosmetic — and considerably more expensive.

Check your drainage slope, not just your drains. A blocked drain is an easy fix; a terrace or balcony that was never sloped correctly toward the drain in the first place is a design problem that resurfaces every single year.

Choose exterior paint rated for humidity, not just colour. Standard interior-grade paint used outdoors is one of the most common causes of peeling and algae growth we see on facades across Rajarhat and New Town.

Boundary walls need attention too. Hairline cracks that seem cosmetic in March can let in enough water by September to compromise the wall's plaster entirely.

Gutters and downpipes are cheap insurance. Many independent houses in Salt Lake and Kestopur still rely on runoff simply flowing off the roof edge — a proper gutter system protects the facade paint directly beneath it for years longer.
